Participation in the Big Sur International Marathon 25 ° has become one of the highlights of my life as a runner and walker.
Arrival
We flew into San Jose, California on Friday morning before the marathon on Sunday. Thanks to the economic strength of Silicon Valley, you can fly into this airport from many other cities. The airport was under construction with some beautiful new building in the works. (Not all airports are still under construction?) And someVehicular traffic has been diverted in and around the airport, but everything ran pretty smoothly.
We have a shuttle bus to our destiny rental car, took the rental car and headed south for less than two hours from Caramel. Maybe you want a GPS system with you, because you need to change freeways to get a couple of times around the Caramel.
There
We stayed at the Caramel Mission Inn, across the street from the finish. On Friday and Saturday night room was almostDouble-Sunday-night. I do not know if this was typical and reflects the strong demand for weekend marathon.
A large complex of shops and restaurants called The Barnyard was on the back of the hotel, so we went for our dinner and some window shopping.
The Expo
We returned to the north on Saturday morning - and not visit all the way to San Jose, but just minutes from Highway 1 to Monterey Expo, where we get our race wasPackages.
The Expo is free and open to the public, and we heard excellent speeches by Dean Karnazes and Jeff Galloway for the participants. Dean is the man who ran 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days, and he had to have a two-hour-long line of people waiting to be stimulating book "50/50" signs.
The race
Big Sur is home to some of the races Sunday morning:
Marathon Marathon Relay 21-Miler 10.6 Miler 9-Miler 5K 3KThe marathon, marathon relay, 21 km run,and 10.6 mile race with all of Highway 1 (closed by the California Highway Patrol for several hours), to the south at the start and finish of the marathon begins with most of the race by 10.6 miles in the parking lot of Rocky Point restaurant where we ate the evening of race day, delicious meals, watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean.
9 miles The race takes place mostly in a wooded area not far south of the finish line. The 5K race begins and ends at the finish line of the marathon. The 3K isChildren and pass around the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
So, even if Big Sur is not a host for a half marathon the same weekend, there are many other breeds to choose from when you run or walk with someone a bit 'shorter than a marathon wants.
In short, I recommend you run or walk the Big Sur, at least once in your life!
